Gwrych Castle Restoration

Give the Gwrych preservation trust the backing they need for restoration of projects I.e. The conservatory and melon room. This would bring in jobs and, most importantly, tourists to Abergele. This would benefit all the businesses in the town and make the most long term of this funding.

  • Gwyrch Castle is an amazing building. It would be an amazing tourist attraction if it was restored. Frankly I'm amazed that it was allowed to get into a state where it needed restoring!

  • We arrange private tours all over North Wales and bring a great deal of revenue to the area. Our groups have attended en mass the Gwrych Castle Open Days this year, every one of them and we have been overwhelmed by the effort and the work that is going on there by the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust. Who are now jointly in partnership at last and able to do something with this wonderful estate to help it after years of ownership issues. The latest owners have made the Trust their partners and they are leasing the Estate to the Trust at last. We will be there encouring tourists to Abergele and bringing a lot of revenue to Abergele if the powers that be at Conwy Council will at last do something to support this magestic landmark and not keep dismissing it. Thousands of people are supporting the Trust and it is worldwide. We get visitors from overseas all the time asking to attend Gwrych Castle and now we can offer them something thanks to the Trust doing their events. We will be there again on the 23rd of August offering our support as tourists and booking coaches of tourists to attend all their events. Why is it that Conwy Council have not helped more and you now have your chance to do the right thing and to do all possible to back the Gwrych Castle Trust who are an organised and forward thinking Charity to further their aim and bring a landmark back to life in Abergele. Cannot praise their efforts enough and it's remarkable to see such hard work going on with Staff, Volunteers and Trustees. Who give their time freely to help Abergele. Back them please and let's get this show on the road. The Trust have the power to make a difference and they need you Conwy Council. So do we. My childhood holidays were spent in Abergele. Nothing there now and we want those good times back and relive our memories at Gwrych with our Grandchildren! Make it happen! Thank you.

  • Driving along the A55, the view of Gwrych Castle is fairytale !!!
Other town would love to have a Castle like this, especially since the Trust has cleared the overgrowth.
Conwy Council seem to prefer to spend their European Funding Grants on places such as Porth Eirias. Why can't Conwy Council try for European Funding to help Gwrych Castle to its former glory, even theough its privately owned. .

  • Funding should be provided for the Gwrych Trust to carry out the public access elements of the restoration project at the castle. The first phase would involve the creation of a visitor centre and reinstatement of the formal garden and conservatory. It would provide a new visitor destination for Abergele and would also provide new jobs, as well as ensuring public access to a local landmark.

  • I live in America and just starting following the Preservation Trust and their work at Gwrych. I am fascinated and impressed. I plan on visiting the UK in the future and would love to make Abergele a stop. I am also following a French Chateau restoration and would love to see that also. I am of Scottish heritage so if I have to choose one, I will be choosing to visit North Wales! Please continue the restoration and support of Grwych Castle.

  • This is a wonderful idea. The Castle is an obvious and immediate draw for tourists and could be a real jewel on the North Wales Coast.

  • this wonderful place holds a special place in people's hearts from far and wide,it's majestic looking from afar and get's better the closer you get,it would be a crime to lose this magnificent building and with restoration I'm sure will bring in a large tourist revenue to the local community

  • Hello, my name is Chuck Vellone, and I live in Reno, Nevada (USA). I have recently joined the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust, via their Facebook page and Website. I have been to the UK 3 times in the past 7 years, twice in the last two years, visiting friends, and seeing the castle from the distance.

I was first made aware of the Castle back in 2008 while during an escorted tour through the UK, when we past through northern Wales. The guide pointed out the castle up against the hillside, in the distance, as our bus drove toward Chester, England. All that was said is that Gwryck was not a medieval castle but a home built by a rich family in the 1800s

The 2nd time I saw the castle was when friends pointed it out in the distance as we traveled to Llandudno and they said it was not a castle, in the terms of battlement, but a private home built by a rich family.

And the 3rd time was last year when I was hiking in the Coed y Gopa Park and saw the castle, again off in the distance. I thought that would be an amazing place to visit, and explore, but from where I was at the Park, I had no idea how to get there, or if I would even be able walk to the castle itself.

I thought it was just an abandoned ruin that would make a great hotel, if it could ever be rebuilt. And now to find the Preservation Trust is indeed trying to do that, not to build a hotel though, but restore the castle itself, is amazing.

I am in touch with the Trust several times a week, via my computer (emails, chat, facebook, messenger, etc) chatting about the goings on, the weekend events, etc. At there last event a few weeks ago, I went so far as to have sent them a couple of Peace Lillies plants, as a way of saying Thank you for the work done, Good Luck on the opening weekend event, and also in a way to welcome those in attendance, since I could not be there myself (5,000 miles away is not an easy jaunt to say Hi).

I will be back to Wales in a couple years to visit friends in Prestayn celebrating my 65th birthday, and will visit the castle while I am there, with intentions of even spending the day helping somehow with volunteer work. I would love to see the castle with the local folks who are there all the time, and learning it's culture, the history, the people, etc.

I have been looking at the ongoing preservation plan of the tower, and see the pics of the weekend activities that have been held there over the past month. It looks to be quite a fete to restore this marvelous addition which overlooks you city. And I hope the City council/Township, will give the Preservation Trust help in the restoration process.

I am not a writer by any means, and do not know if my letter helps, or hinders the Trusts plans. So I hope you will forgive me in trying to make a point, to help the Castle in someway, and it came out badly.

Thank you for your time in reading my letter. I will give the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust a full 5 ***** for their efforts.

    Sincerely,
    Charles (Chuck) Vellone
