Upgrade Town Centre Street Scene

The town centre would really benefit from being improved, with enhancements to the built environment - shop fronts, re-introduction of canopies; also hard and soft landscaping with hanging baskets, flower troughs, etc.

  • If we as commentators for the Abergele Place making Plan do not know what finances are available I believe the people are unable to recommend clear and concise suggestions. E.g. I may suggest that we have a Cable Car built from Gwrych Castle to Tower Hill where a café/ Hotel is to be built. This would be nonsense of course. However if the Library were to be re-located to the Community Centre the cost is quite small and the use of the iconic building would be enhanced. The health centre should be moved to the doctor’s surgery. The vacated building should be changed for use as an Art and Craft Centre/ Museum. Change the use of the existing library into a Play Centre and other Community Centre/Youth Club use. Requests followed by enforcement orders should be made to “clean up the town to improve the look and appearance of the town centre. The kerb appeal is very poor – tatty shop fronts, ugly charity shops, private flats with bins out all day, take away slum shops, empty shops for years, bad parking and jay walkers. No police/wardens to enforce by-laws.

  • Abergele looks very nice with hanging basket now. Christmas Time it is the best looking town in Conwy, 2nd to LLandudno.
Pleased Council have finally approved of free 2 hrs car park in Library Car Park, I don't think canopies are the answer, it is only cosmetic, and fades after about 3 years, and will need replacing.
3 of Abergele biggest shops are now empty, any chance of change of use to business or a good shop. Plenty of Abergele people supposrt local shops

  • I agree the town centre needs a face lift. Sympathetic with the market town Abergele was, making it look cluttered with awnings etc , I think is a backward step however, brightening up the building frontages, and making the empty buildings display something, maybe get the artistic youth to create graphic montages on the windows of empty shops. Competition for window designs amongst the youth of Abergele might engage them, it's their town as well as the older generation.

  • Can we please have a themed castellated scene supported by shops in the High Street. It needs a theme in the High Street and at present the shop windows look very disjointed and disconnected. Shame as we have to see them every day and we are trying to encourage more tourism, trade and employment.

  • As Abergele is a historic market town, the general aesthetic should reflect this, and the scheme should take its lead from towns such as Denbigh, Colwyn Bay and Llanrwst. Not Rhyl, where the upgrading has really had very little effect upon the appearance of the high street. The rich pictorial archive material of old Abergele, in particular, Market Street, would provide enough information for the streetscene to be recreated. A sense of place is what is missing at present as there has been no overall vision for the look of the town.

  • Upgrading the town centre street scene, is a massive priority for Abergele.
All routes entering are always tidy, nice flower beds etc, but then you reach the main shopping area and it is such a let down, it needs a major clean up and character re-introduced, if we want to attract visitors and for us locals to say we have a lovely high street in Abergele it has to look good!
The introduction of canopies would be great a feature, any improvements need to be made with sympathy to the past, it would be concerning if improvements turned out to be modern 'high street' style.
There are some architectural gems along Market Street, these need to be highlighted as do the ghost signs that need to be preserved. Information points along the high street would be of interest to many.

Unfortunately there are empty shops here at the moment, whilst every effort to get these premises back open again should be encouraged. In the meantime, instead of adverts stuck in the windows, art projects, general abandonment. How about window stickers that show old photos , pictures, places of interest, promote the history and story of Abergele.

  • I like the town already, but a few flowers, etc. always cheer a place up.

  • This is very much required, but consideration of the traffic congestion and road layout will need to be a key factor too.
